What’s With the Red Sunglasses?
What’s the first logo that springs to your head when you hear “voice over"? What? It’s NOT red sunglasses? Get out… So I bet it’s a microphone, right? Ok well here’s the thing - how many voice actors do you think use a microphone as a logo? If you said “a lot,” you’d be absolutely correct! So if my logo were a microphone do you think it would stand out? Do you think you’d remember it after seeing it? Probably not. Buuuuuuuuut - the next time you see red sunglasses, especially if in a voiceover setting, you’re probably going to think of that eclectic but super rad voice actor, Allison Cossitt, amiright? Awwwwwwwwyeah.
So where did this 10 out of 10 for branding idea come from?
I tried to think of a memorable and iconic logo, but also one that fit my personality, was recognizable and was small enough so that I could incorporate it in photo shoots. Well it just so happened that I had a pair of red sunglasses I’d managed not to lose yet (a feat in itself, as most of my sunglasses are with me for a shorter amount of time than my first boyfriend (it was about three months for those keeping score. Sorry Bob, it wasn’t you, if was DEFINETLY me)). Alright, so sunglasses seemed like a good plan, but I had several pairs of sunglasses since I’m always, ahem, misplacing them. So, which color should I choose? Well with another dash of inspiration (dare I say… a ‘Vash’ of inspiration…) a logo was born.
Ok, I’m about to get nerdy so proceed with caution if you’re too cool for school and if not - hop in nerds! Let’s GOOOOOOOO!
The red is also an homage to my favorite anime of all time, Trigun (OG 98 if you need specifics and while Stampede is amazing, nothing, NOTHING will ever come close to the perfection of 98, rant over). I did not have a full-length double-breasted Vash the Stampede red coat handy, so the glasses would have to do. Then when it came to the complimentary colors for my brand, it was a easy choice to go with black and white as a complimentary homage to Nicholas D. Wolfwood. Yes, I let a 20 year old cartoon dictate my logo. Deal with it. Sometimes being an adult rocks.
So there you have it friends! The story behind my voiceover red sunglasses logo.
Note to any sunglasses manufacturers - I will eagerly and happily accept any and all pairs of red sunglasses you want to send me, and I will incorporate them into some rad social influencer photo shoots. In fact, please do sent them as I live in fear of the day I lose my only pair.
Love & Peace!
